Why it’s delicious

One of the hardest things about adopting a healthy lifestyle is giving up some of your “comfort foods” with burgers for me being one of my cornerstones of reassuring dining.  So I made it my mission to recreate something that makes me feel right at home whilst still helping me to maintain my optimum wellness.

Helpful hints + tips

For the top and bottom of this burger, I use my homemade Cauliflower Muffin Tops (Page 48 | More from Bridget’s Healthy Kitchen), but you could also use my Low Carb English Muffins - recipe can be found HERE

This recipe requires Bridget's Sticky Sauce, a healthy cooking sauce I use in many of my recipes. It's simple, healthy and packs a lot of flavour without adding unnecessary calories. If you need the recipe, you can get it here.

I keep this beef burger pretty simple, but you could also add any of the following to really impress your taste buds:

  • 2 heaped tablespoons of my MAVO dressing
  • ½ cup sliced cooked mushrooms
  • 2 slices of ripe but firm avocado
  • 2 tsp sugar-free mustard
  • 2 eggs, fried on baking paper

Ingredients

For the patty

  • 200 g (7 oz) lean beef mince (ground beef)
  • 4 cloves roasted garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp pure garlic powder
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp Himalayan salt
  • 4 tsp Bridget's Sticky Sauce
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and thickly sliced into rounds
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • 4 leaves iceberg lettuce, torn
  • 4 Cauliflower Muffin Tops or Low Carb English Muffins

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl combine the beef mince, roasted garlic, garlic powder, pepper and salt. Using clean hands, mix the beef until the seasoning and garlic is well combined.
  2. Divide the meat into two round balls and flatten with the palm of your hand to make 2 thick patties.
  3. Heat a large frying pan on medium to high heat and add 1 teaspoon of the sticky sauce to the top of each patty and spread the sauce out a little with the teaspoon.
  4. Place the patties, sticky sauce side down, into the hot pan and allow them to cook for a couple of minutes. Add  the sliced onions rounds to the pan as well and season everything with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  5. Place a lid on the pan and cook for a further 2 minutes and then carefully flip the patties and continue to cook  for another couple of minutes. Flip the onions as well and cook until golden.
  6. Assemble your burger by placing a muffin top down on a plate and top with a burger patty and onions. Follow this with some slices of tomato,  the lettuce and finish with another muffin top. Enjoy!
